The rod weight formula

Weight per metre (kg) = d² ÷ 162, where d is the rod’s diameter in mm. Per foot it is d² ÷ 532.

The formula comes from the rod’s cross-section (π/4 × d²) and the density of steel (7,850 kg/m³); the exact constant is 162.2. The calculator uses the full formula.

Example: 40 rods of 12 mm, 40 ft each

  1. Weight per foot: 12² ÷ 532 = 144 ÷ 532 = about 0.271 kg.
  2. Total length: 40 × 40 = 1,600 ft (487.68 m).
  3. Total weight: about 432.97 kg, or 0.433 tonne.
  4. At ৳1,00,000 a tonne (an example only): 0.433 × 1,00,000 = about ৳43,297.

These are theoretical weights; real rods can weigh slightly more or less within the maker’s tolerance.

Before you buy

  • Rod prices change and differ by brand and dealer, so none is built in. Enter the price you were quoted.
  • Check the weighed weight on the bill and at delivery.
  • How much rod you need depends on the design; take lengths and numbers from your engineer’s bar bending schedule.
  • To write a Taka amount in words, use Taka Amount in Words; for land, the Land Area Calculator.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose the rod size (diameter) and whether you give lengths in feet or metres.
  2. Enter the length of one rod and the number of rods. Bangla digits work.
  3. For the cost, enter the price per tonne; otherwise leave it blank.
  4. Select Calculate weight to see the total in kg and tonnes, the weight per metre and foot, and the cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for rod weight?

Weight in kg per metre = d² ÷ 162, where d is the diameter in mm (more exactly d² ÷ 162.2, from the density of steel, 7,850 kg/m³). Per foot it is d² ÷ 532.

How much does a 12 mm rod weigh per foot?

About 0.271 kg per foot (0.888 kg per metre). A 40 ft bar of 12 mm weighs about 10.8 kg.

What does a 10 mm rod weigh per metre?

About 0.617 kg. Other common sizes: 8 mm 0.395, 16 mm 1.578, 20 mm 2.466 and 25 mm 3.853 kg per metre.

How many tonnes are 40 bars of 12 mm, 40 ft long?

The total length is 40 × 40 = 1,600 ft (487.68 m), so the weight is about 432.97 kg, or 0.433 tonne. At ৳1,00,000 a tonne (an example price) that is about ৳43,297.

Why does the weighed rod differ from the calculator?

The formula gives the theoretical weight. Real bars can be slightly heavier or lighter within the maker’s rolling tolerance, so for buying and billing, go by the weighed or certified weight.

Does the calculator know today’s rod price?

No. Prices change and differ between dealers and brands, so enter the price per tonne you were quoted. Leave it blank to see the weight only.
