Percentage formulas

“Percent” means “out of 100”. Pick the question you are asking and the calculator uses the matching formula:

  • What is P% of Y? P ÷ 100 × Y
  • X is what percent of Y? X ÷ Y × 100 (Y can’t be 0)
  • Percentage change from A to B: (B − A) ÷ A × 100, using the size of A (A can’t be 0)
  • Increase or decrease Y by P%: Y × (1 + P ÷ 100) to increase, or Y × (1 − P ÷ 100) to decrease
  • X is P% of what number? X ÷ (P ÷ 100) (P can’t be 0)

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose what you want to find. The sentence under the choices shows the question.
  2. Fill in the two boxes. Decimals and negative numbers are allowed where they make sense.
  3. Select Calculate. The answer, a sentence and the working appear below.

When you change what you want to find, the earlier answer is cleared so it can’t be mistaken for the new question.

Worked examples

Percent of a number

15% of 2,000 = 15 ÷ 100 × 2,000 = 300.

What percent

45 out of 60 = 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.

Percentage change

From 80 to 100: (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% increase. From 100 back to 80: (80 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 20% decrease. The two percentages differ because the starting number is different each time.

Increase or decrease by a percent

1,000 increased by 10% = 1,000 × 1.10 = 1,100. Decreasing that 1,100 by 10% gives 990, not 1,000, for the same reason.

Finding the whole

If 25 is 20% of a number, the number is 25 ÷ 0.20 = 125.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 2,000 is 15 ÷ 100 × 2,000 = 300.

How do I find what percent one number is of another?

Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 60 is 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%. The second number (the whole) can’t be 0.

How is percentage change calculated?

Subtract the starting value from the new value, divide by the starting value, and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% higher. A negative answer means a decrease. The starting value can’t be 0.

Why is a 25% increase not undone by a 25% decrease?

Because each percentage is taken from a different starting number. 100 plus 25% is 125, but 25% of 125 is 31.25, so decreasing 125 by 25% gives 93.75, not 100. To get back to 100 you need a 20% decrease.

How are negative numbers handled?

They work in every mode. The percentage in “increase or decrease” must be 0 or more because you choose the direction separately. For percentage change, the size of the starting value is used, so going from −50 to −25 is a 50% increase because the value moved up.

How many decimal places are shown?

Up to 4 decimal places, with trailing zeros removed. The calculation itself isn’t rounded; only the display is. A non-zero answer that is too small to show is written as less than 0.0001.
