The split will appear here

Enter what each person paid, then select Split the cost.

How the split works

  1. Share each = total spent ÷ number of people.
  2. Balance = what someone paid − their share. Positive means they get money back; negative means they owe.
  3. The person who owes the most pays the person owed the most, and so on until everyone is even.

Example: a ৳12,000 trip for 4

Rahim paid ৳6,000, Karim ৳4,000 and Jamal ৳2,000; Salam paid nothing. The share is ৳12,000 ÷ 4 = ৳3,000 each. Rahim gets ৳3,000 back and Karim ৳1,000; Jamal owes ৳1,000 and Salam ৳3,000. Two payments settle it: Salam pays Rahim ৳3,000 and Jamal pays Karim ৳1,000.

Keeping it simple

  • Agree before the trip which costs everyone shares equally.
  • Note who paid for what as it happens, on your phone or in a notebook.
  • So shares add up to the paisa, any leftover paisa are added one each to the first people in the list.
  • For a mess where people eat different numbers of meals, the Mess Meal Calculator charges by meals; to count cash, use the Cash Counter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a trip’s cost equally?

Add up what everyone paid and divide by the number of people. A ৳12,000 trip for 4 is ৳3,000 each. Anyone who paid more than ৳3,000 gets money back; anyone who paid less pays the difference.

How does the calculator decide who pays whom?

The person who owes the most pays the person owed the most, and so on until everyone is even. In the example, Salam pays Rahim ৳3,000 and Jamal pays Karim ৳1,000: two payments instead of everyone paying everyone.

What if the total doesn’t divide evenly?

The calculator works in paisa. ৳100 among 3 people is ৳33.34 for the first person and ৳33.33 for the others, so the payments add up exactly.

Someone didn’t pay anything. Do they still share the cost?

Yes. Enter their name and leave the amount blank or 0: they share the cost equally and owe their full share.

Can I split unequally, for example by days?

This calculator splits equally. For a mess where people eat different numbers of meals, use the Mess Meal Calculator, which charges by meals.

Is my list saved?

Only on your device, in “Your recent calculations”, which you can clear or turn off. Names and amounts are never sent anywhere.
